Hey. I’m Joe, and I’m an audio engineer and artist based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia.
I discovered my passion for audio engineering when I discovered the work of John Oswald and other ‘plunderphonic’ composers while studying composition at UC Berkeley. I quickly got my hands on a DAW and started experimenting, first making a piece of music out of footage from a skate video my friend was shooting.
Eight years later, I have a Bachelors of Fine Art in Music Composition, a Cert. IV in Sound Production, I’ve worked at studios across Naarm/Melbourne, and now run my own mastering studio in Brunswick East. Tracks I have mixed and mastered have been played on BBC Radio 1, Netflix, and on the major radio stations here in Australia.
I first worked as the in-house engineer at Smooch Records, and then at Woodstock Studios as the second engineer. Prior to the pandemic, I was an engineer at the Brian Brown Studio at the Victorian College of the Arts.
Currently, I am an in-house A/V technician at the National Gallery of Victoria and MPavilion, and mix and master from my studio, the School of Sound Spill and Echo.
I believe in a people driven approach to audio production. A studio can feel intimidating and elitist. I’m an advocate for deconstructing that culture - in addition to making the environment friendlier, it produces the best results.
